Teaching Your Gr1-6 Child Geography - St Aiden's Homeschool, South Africa | CurrClick

Teaching Your Gr1-6 Child Geography - St Aiden's Homeschool, South Africa | CurrClick

My aim with compiling this book is that as parents and educators, we will get ideas for activities that will use our children's play to help them learn more about geography--the study of the Earth.

Most of the suggestions in this book are geared to children from 5 to 12 years of age. Bear in mind, however, that youngsters vary widely in their development, and others--younger and older--may find the activities appropriate.

The activities and games are organised around five specific themes that help focus our thinking:

  1. Where are things located?
  2. What characteristics make a place special?
  3. What are relationships among people and places?
  4. What are the patterns of movement of people, products, and information?
  5. How can the Earth be divided into regions for study?

Each chapter begins with some background and examples of questions that geographers use as they strive to understand the Earth. This is followed by activities to help children learn key ideas.

There are two specific sets of lesson plans. Teaching kindergarten through 3rd grade about maps, which includes 7 lesson plans, 2 activity sheets, and teacher's information sheet comprising teaching ideas and lesson plan. This section teaches children how to understand and use maps.

Four lessons focus on What Do Maps Show? and combined with the lessons, teaches students basic geographic and cartographic skills.

Included are a selection Notepages, which are ideal for use in Notebooks, Lapbooks, file folders or for use in projects. These pages can be printed out as and when required.

As with the Activity Pages, Maps, Q & A’s etc, please print however many copies of the section you would require. Some of the Activity Sheets and Maps in the Lesson Plans are to be used with a number of the lessons.

Credits and references on appropriate pages and/or are reflected in the credits towards the end of this book.

Illustrations are either sourced from the Public Domain, credited to US Department of Education or from my own collection of Green Label Clipart.

Unit is compiled in A4 and UK English.

End Malnutrition in Guatemala - The Petition Site

End Malnutrition in Guatemala - The Petition Site

Malnutrition is an underlying cause in more than half of the 25,000 daily, preventable deaths of children and remains as one of the world's most serious health problems. And Guatemala faces some of the worst malnutrition in Central and Latin America.

Thankfully, UNICEF is leading the charge against hunger through an innovative solution called "sprinkles" -- small packets filled with necessary vitamins and minerals that are mixed into children's food.
